Description:

Under general supervision, the Family Development Specialist is responsible for curriculum planning, family goals development, and implementation of the Early Head Start program with a caseload of infants/toddlers and their families or pregnant mothers. Provides direct service to identified Early Head Start families and their Infants/toddlers including children with disabilities through home visits and organized small group meetings. Builds nurturing relationships with families and regularly helps family members to evaluate their growth and development. Assists families in identifying strengths and needs and develops individual family and child development services plans to meet their needs. Leads parents in conducting and interpreting assessments of child's developmental needs. Works with parents, pregnant mothers, infants or toddlers individually and in small groups on age appropriate activities that promote language, cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Plans with parents and conducts at least one ninety minute home visit per week with each family, insuring inclusion of child development, nutrition, health and safety, and parent education activities. Plans/conducts small group meetings for enrolled infants/toddlers and/or families. Obtains children's health histories and ensures that physical examinations are obtained from a physician, Child Health and Disability Prevention Program, or other source.

Requirements:

Minimum BA degree in Child Development/ Early Childhood Education or a related field. Minimum two years direct service experience in an integrated family service program or infant/toddler service program. Bilingual in Spanish or Southeast Asian languages desirable (may be required in some target areas). Experience working with low income and high-risk families of diverse cultures desirable. In-depth knowledge of infant/toddler growth and development, and family development required. Ability to develop and maintain supportive, respectful, and empowering relationships with families, children and co-workers. Advanced skill in effective communication, both verbal and written. Knowledge of adult learning processes desirable. Must have valid California Driver’s License and automobile with proof of insurance. Physical Examination and TB screening are required after employment. Infant/Child CPR/First Aid required per State Licensing regulations. Fingerprinting required and must clear as a condition of employment. Former Early Head Start/Head Start parents preferred.
