America Recycles Day on November 15 encourages people to purchase recycled products and recycle more for a greener, cleaner environment. According to CalRecycle, the average Californian throws away about 2,000 pounds of garbage every year. Fresno EOC Local Conservation Corps offers many recycling services to help residents of Fresno County reduce their trash footprint, and most are free. Plus, you can redeem your CRV beverage containers with us for cash.

Fresno EOC Recycling Program Manager Julio Lopez says between July to September 2022, “LCC helped residents recycle more than 45 tons of used or unwanted products. That includes 630 tires, 482 mattresses, 89,773 pounds of CRV (bottles and cans), and 5,790 pounds of e-waste. And that helps contribute to a safer, cleaner community.”

To highlight America Recycles Day, Fresno EOC Local Conservation Corps (LCC) and the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) hosted a media event to highlight the aligning efforts of the Fresno EOC recycling program, the Bye Bye Mattress program, and Beautify Fresno, Mayor Jerry Dyer’s initiative to improve the City of Fresno’s “curb appeal” through community-based cleanup and beautification projects. Local media were invited to a press conference and tour of the LCC site.

Shawn Riggins, Director of the Fresno EOC LCC, is committed to ensuring young adults at the LCC play a role in the City of Fresno’s focus to beautify the city while remaining environmentally focused. “LCC corpsmembers are trained to give back to the community. We are training tomorrow’s leaders, today!”

LCC has operated the recycling program sponsored by CalRecycle for nearly 30 years.

At Fresno EOC LCC, young adults between the ages of 18-26, will have the opportunity to participate in the following vocational training areas: recycling, solar/weatherization, construction, public lands, and landscaping with earnings of $16 per hour.

In addition to developing vocational skills, corps members are required to enroll and progress in an academic program concurrent to their enrollment in LCC’s paid skill-building vocational training programs.
