To highlight America Recycles Day, Fresno EOC Local Conservation Corps (LCC) and the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) hosted a media event to highlight the aligning efforts of the Fresno EOC recycling program, the Bye Bye Mattress program, and Beautify Fresno, Mayor Jerry Dyer’s initiative to improve the City of Fresno’s “curb appeal” through community-based cleanup and beautification projects. Local media were invited to a press conference and tour of the LCC site.
Shawn Riggins, Director of the Fresno EOC LCC, is committed to ensuring young adults at the LCC play a role in the City of Fresno’s focus to beautify the city while remaining environmentally focused. “LCC corpsmembers are trained to give back to the community. We are training tomorrow’s leaders, today!”
LCC has operated the recycling program sponsored by CalRecycle for nearly 30 years.

In addition to developing vocational skills, corps members are required to enroll and progress in an academic program concurrent to their enrollment in LCC’s paid skill-building vocational training programs. Corps members lacking a high school diploma enroll in the on-site YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC). High school graduates are encouraged to enroll in local college classes. Once enrolled at LCC, corps members can receive an AmeriCorps scholarship, which allows them to earn an education award (college scholarship), up to $2,300, while serving their community.
