It’s baaack! After a two-year break due to COVID-19, the Safe Night Out Halloween event in Southwest Fresno is returning. The epic evening for candy crawlers is coming back in full force with food, sweets, entertainment, and more! Everyone is invited to participate in the monstrous event on Monday, October 31, from 4PM to 7PM on California Avenue between Elm Avenue and Poppy Street. There will be haunted houses and mazes, a costume contest, a Trunk-or-Treat, and games. Plus, there will be free food while supplies last.

The West Fresno Family Resource Center launched the event more than 20 years ago and it was well-attended each October. It is now a collaborative effort of local non-profits, faith institutions, and the City of Fresno, including the Southwest Policing District. Yolanda Randles, Executive Director of the West Fresno Family Resource Center, says it just made sense to partner with neighboring organizations. “One of the great things about working in this community is when we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we can welcome even more people, especially those in deep distress, and perhaps help them for a few hours enjoy time with their families.”

As a result of the collaborative effort, the Safe Night Out Halloween Committee was formed, and as of 2019, it includes Fresno EOC Local Conservation Corps (LCC). The street will be closed off in front of the LCC building on Halloween to allow children a safe environment to trick-or-treat. LCC Director, Shawn Riggins, says, “We are thrilled to bring this event back to the heart of Southwest Fresno after it was shut down temporarily due to the pandemic. Safe Night Out Halloween will provide an opportunity for families to participate in a community event for all ages. All this is possible thanks to a tremendous collaborative effort between partners and donations from the community.”

Come join the festivities. It will be a scream! But don’t worry, organizers promise more fun than fright for your little ones.

How to be Involved

This event is conjured up with a bit of hocus pocus and help from the community. LCC invites everyone to attend, have a table, donate, or partner on this year’s “Safe Night Out Halloween.” The following are opportunities for individuals and/or organizations to support the festivities:

  • Have a table at the event
  • Sponsor a game at your information table
  • Donate assorted, individually-wrapped candy
  • Decorate a vehicle and participate in the Trunk-or-Treat
  • Donate money to aid in the purchase of food and/or decorations for the event
  • Donate a new child-size Halloween costume

If you are interested in any of the opportunities listed above or have questions, please call Tracy Pierce at (559) 264-1048 or emailĀ Tracy.Pierce@fresnoeoc.org by Friday, October 21, 2022.
