Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center partnered with local leaders and organizations to host the Illuminate Our Pride Solidarity March on Facebook, due to a rise of COVID-19 cases throughout California. “At our agency, we have the opportunity to address the racial injustice and social injustice in this community,” said Emilia Reyes, CEO of Fresno EOC. “Race and equity are at the forefront of my leadership and it’s a priority for us at Fresno EOC.”
The purpose of the event was to highlight the community’s fight for equity during Pride month, as thousands across the country continue to protest against racial injustice. “As LGBTQ+ Individuals, we are all aware of the intersectionality we hold, and it’s important we take the time to articulate that,” said D’Aungillique Jackson of Fresno State NAACP. “When we are talking about a fight against police brutality, we know this is affecting LGBTQ+ individuals as well. If we are not standing up and using our voice to stand alongside the Black Lives Matter movement, we have to make sure we are making space for that.”
The diversity of partners made this event an intimate and empowering conversation among those making a difference in the local LGBTQ+ community. Among those making this event a success were speakers from many local organizations; Fresno State NAACP, Trans-E-Motion, Fresno Black Girl Magic Project, Fresno Barrios Unidos, FAB Fresno, Queer Hmong Intersectional Pride, Fresno Stonewall Democrats, and WestCare BEAT Program.
“Our country and the world are in the midst of an important movement,” said Jennifer Cruz, LGBTQ+ Manager. “As the LGBTQ+ Resource Center in Fresno, we will march for our community and commit to standing up for our queer and trans people of color.”
