November marks Youth HOPE Month, a time to shine a light on the struggles faced by runaway and homeless youth and raise awareness about the resources available to support them. Fresno EOC Sanctuary Support Services is at the forefront of this mission, providing shelter, guidance, and opportunities for vulnerable youth to build a brighter future.
“The importance of Youth HOPE Month is to bring and increase awareness to the plight of homeless and runaway youth,” said Chrystal Streets, Sanctuary Support Manager. “Each year, thousands of youth run away from home, and often, they struggle to find a safe place to shelter. This can lead to long-term homelessness and other challenges.”
For nearly 50 years, Fresno EOC Sanctuary and Support Services have been transforming lives through emergency, temporary, and permanent housing solutions. Guided by Fresno EOC mission to fight to end poverty, the program follows a Housing-First model, prioritizing swift placement into safe and accessible shelter as the first step toward stability. Onsite health and social support services are available 24/7 to help individuals regain their footing and build a path to independence.
On-site staff are dedicated to supporting and guiding clients throughout their journey. “We’ve seen so many youth come through our doors in dire circumstances, homeless and uncertain about their future, and leave our program as fully functioning adults,” says Samm Wood, Shelter Services Coordinator. “They gain employment, secure their own apartments, and even enroll in college.”
Currently, Fresno EOC operates two programs that are both at full capacity: Youth Bridge Housing, which provides a four- to six-month stay for youth in need, and the Sanctuary Transitional Shelter, an emergency shelter offering up to 90 days of safe housing. Clients are provided with a bed, meals and essentials during their stay.
Over the past year, Fresno EOC Sanctuary Support Services has made a meaningful impact:
- 187 individuals served, with 113 successfully exiting into permanent housing.
- 58 classes offered to teach essential health, safety, and independent living skills.
“Youth providers across the nation work together to educate the public about these challenges,” added Streets. “Together, we can advocate for solutions that prevent youth homelessness and create safe spaces for them to thrive.”
